The Swing That Stays: Nearly a Century of Craft at Moon Valley

We’ve been building log swings since 1928. That’s not a tagline, it’s the truth. It started in Holly, Michigan, with a small team, simple tools, and a pretty revolutionary idea for its time: the A-frame lawn swing. Fast forward nearly 100 years, and we’re still making that same swing, because we got it right the first time.

If you’ve seen a cedar outdoor swing in someone’s yard, worn smooth from use and weathered to that soft gray cedar gets over time, odds are Moon Valley Rustics built it. We’ve made over 20,000 of them, and a good number are still out there, still in use. There’s something satisfying about that kind of longevity, not just in the product, but in the work.

Built to Hold Up, Not Blend In

We manufacture all our swings in Monroe, Michigan. That’s important. It means we control every cut, every joint, every step of the process. No kits, no offshore parts, no rushed assembly. Just solid northern white cedar or ponderosa pine, shaped and joined the same way we’ve done for generations.

The swing bench is the cornerstone. It’s not trying to be something it’s not. It’s just right, sturdy, balanced, honest. You can hang it on a porch, mount it on an A-frame, or let it settle into a corner of the yard where the breeze hits just right. These swings aren’t built to impress. They’re built to be used.

And they get used. Morning coffee, afternoon naps, long phone calls, short conversations that turn into longer ones. You don’t schedule time for a swing. You just end up there.

Tools We Built Ourselves

When you work with real wood, mass-production shortcuts don’t cut it, literally. Most of our manufacturing equipment is custom-built in-house. That’s not some fancy tech play. It’s practical. We needed tools that could handle hand-selected logs, irregular grain, and traditional dowel construction. So we built them.

This isn’t just a job to us, it’s an ongoing relationship with the material. You learn the weight, the resistance, the way cedar gives a little under pressure but never splits if you treat it right. That knowledge is in every piece.

Shade Where It Counts

For folks who want more out of their setup, we offer a swing with a canopy. Same swing. Same weight and feel. But with shade and protection when the weather turns. The canopy kits are designed to fit our frames exactly. No fuss. No flapping fabric or mismatched hardware. Just coverage that holds up through sun, rain, and wind.

It's not about bells and whistles. It's about extending the hours you can spend outside, making that space just a little more comfortable, a little more usable. Whether it’s a 4-foot swing or our tete-a-tete model, the canopy turns a great swing into a full-on outdoor retreat.

And when the fabric eventually needs replacing, we've got that, too. No scrambling to retrofit some generic cover. We make the replacements ourselves to fit like the first one did.

This is What We Do

We don’t follow design trends. We don’t chase modern materials. We make swings. We make them well. And we’ve made enough of them to know exactly what works and what doesn’t.

So if you’re looking for something that’ll last longer than the patio set you bought last summer, this is it. A Moon Valley swing bench doesn’t try to sell itself. It just sits there, year after year, doing exactly what it’s supposed to.

And when you add a outdoor canopy swing, you’re not just buying comfort, you’re buying time outside, no matter the weather. That’s worth it.
